First I experimented with different oils in my beautiful old oil lamps — none worked. Then I searched for a heathy alternative and finally found a couple in rural Oregon who developed and make these lamps. After using one myself with happy results, I realized that everybody should have access to olive oil lamps as a sustainable augment to beeswax candles. (My old lamps are now decorating a friend's home.)
Olive oil is a 99% pure renewable fuel, so it produces no smoke or odor and can't aggravate allergies. It's also far safer than kerosene or lamp oil as it doesn't catch fire if tipped over. You don't even need to use good quality oil for these lamps. The flame is very bright and you extinguish it by swishing the oil over the wick or pouring new oil over the wick, rather than blowing out or capping while burning (produces soot inside the bottle).
