The question: How did they do it before plastic bags? A question well worth pondering. Less consumption, more local shopping, etc., etc. But now that times have changed, how can we replace all the plastic bags that we've become so used to using? Reusable bags that grocery and other stores sell are usually not the answer as they're made of some type of plastic themselves.
Some answers: What types of carriers do you already have? Think beyond traditional uses (be sure they're washable if you're going to use them for food). I have a wire basket I bought at a flea market and two more from a farm auction. I keep one basket in the car with my smaller bags in it so they're always at hand. The other chic answer is a hand-woven basket. Remember to use your carriers for everything, not just the grocery store!

BioBags are made from a certified 100% compostable and biodegradable film called Mater-Bi, consisting primarily of cornstarch, vegetable oil and compostable polyester. They contain no polyethylene. When exposed to microorganisms in the soil, Master-Bi disappears naturally, leaving no harmful residues. Don't be fooled by so-called compostable bags – check for the ASTM certification.

The buckets are ventilated to allow moisture to evaporate. When full, or every 3-5 days,
